On the Land is made by the people who live it. We’re always on the lookout for good photographers and writers to help tell the stories of New Zealanders living off the land, and for experts able to succinctly share what they know about growing, farming, and living more self-sufficiently.

The On the Land Māori Visual Storyteller Commission
A paid, year-long commission for a Māori photographer to capture the stories of Māori growers across Aotearoa.
At On the Land we believe growing food is an act of care: for the whenua, for community, for the generations coming after us. That kaupapa runs deep in Māori food systems and the mātauranga behind them, and we want to platform those stories through the lens of the people who hold them.
So we’re offering a year-long paid commission for a Māori photographer, a visual storyteller, to capture the mahi of Māori growers, farmers, homesteaders and kaitiaki: the people growing kai and caring for the land across the motu. One photo-led feature in every issue over the coming year, seen through your eyes.
What it is
- A paid commission, at professional rates (we’ll talk through the detail with you).
- One feature in each issue of On the Land over the next year.
- A genuine creative partnership, we’re here to platform your work, not direct it.
Who we’re after
- A photographer with Māori whakapapa.
- Someone drawn to the kaupapa of growing, food sovereignty and life on the whenua.
- Emerging or established, what matters is the eye and the connection to the story.
